Weighing in at half a ton, and measuring around 6 by 4 feet, Tom Faught's "big
pots" have been hand-thrown, 150 pounds at a time. They are made in sections
and connected at the end of the process with the help of a forklift. The vessels
might receive delicately designed etchings, vibrant color glazes, or a glaze
of pure molten metal like bronze, aluminum, copper, or zinc. After donning a
protective suit to withstand the 6000 degree temperatures, Tom threads a solid
coil of metal through the blowtorch. The metal is vaporized through the intense
process, and the liquefied substance soon finds itself clinging to he ceramic
surface of the vessel.
